infinitii flowworks began as the in-house tooling of a consulting engineering firm that got tired of doing the same analysis by hand. That is still visible in how it works.
Origins
infinitii flowworks has its origins in the flow monitoring and analysis work of Kerr Wood Leidal Associates, a Canadian consulting engineering firm established in 1975 to provide municipal infrastructure and resource management services to government, industry and First Nations clients.
KWL built its name on flow monitoring engineers and specialists in data collection, measurement and analysis. As early as 1987, KWL engineers were performing QA/QC and data summary calculations on VisiCalc spreadsheets. By 1995 the team had built a substantial set of in-house tools — sophisticated spreadsheets and Visual Basic programs — to automate the repetitive parts of flow monitoring analysis. Clients were using those tools by 1997.
From in-house tools to a platform
In 2005, in response to increasingly insistent requests from those clients, KWL began developing its collection of spreadsheets and programs into an integrated, real-time, web-based data collection system with engineering analysis built in. Originally called KWL Emerald, it won the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia Award of Merit in 2007.
In June 2009 a substantially rebuilt version launched as flowworks. It included the first web-based tools for performing mathematical calculations on real-time data — the work that became the flowworks Advanced Calculation Engine (FACE), released in July 2011. A complete suite of graphical QA/QC editing tools followed that autumn.
The technology was sold to a Washington State corporation in spring 2010, which drove adoption internationally.
Today
infinitii flowworks was acquired in October 2015 by Carl Data Solutions, now infinitii ai inc., which remains its parent company. That brought a larger development and data science group to the platform, and is the origin of the machine learning now used in sensor anomaly detection, dry weather pattern identification and predictive channels.
The through-line has not changed. flowworks is still shaped by the problem it was built to solve: engineers with more monitoring data than they can analyse by hand, who need answers that hold up to review.

Your data should not be organised by which vendor you bought from. Every source behaves the same way once it is in.
Answers that survive review
Non-destructive editing, complete edit history, and named methods rather than unexplained numbers. Engineers have to defend this work.
A ceiling you can go through
When the built-in analysis runs out, you write your own and deploy it. The platform should not cap how sophisticated your work gets.
